In March 2024, artist Teena Maree received the call no child is ever ready for. She boarded a plane within two hours, but her father was gone before she arrived. She held his hand, kissed him, and said goodbye — and then began the long, tender work of channeling her grief.

In March 2024, artist Teena Maree received the call no child is ever ready for. She boarded a plane within two hours, but her father was gone before she arrived. She held his hand, kissed him, and said goodbye — and then began the long, tender work of channeling her grief.
After the services were over and the week of remembrance had passed, she wanted to honor him in a way that felt as singular as he was. She searched everywhere for something that could hold the weight of who he had been — and found nothing. Nothing that carried the texture of a real life. Nothing that looked like him.
So Teena turned to what she had always known: fifty years of art-making, and a handful of sacred objects. His photographs. His ashes. His glasses. His guilded pill case. And one small orange fishing lure, still threaded on a piece of clear twine.
From these fragments, she built something entirely new — a fused glass, found object, and ash assemblage that didn’t just contain her father’s memory, it embodied it. The result was unlike anything that existed: durable as grief is not, beautiful as love is, and unmistakably, completely him.
That first piece became the foundation of the Daddy’s Ashes collection.
Today, the work has grown into a calling. Each piece is created for someone navigating loss — human or animal, expected or sudden — and made from the actual objects, photographs, and ashes of the one they loved. Glass and metal that will last forever. Art that looks like the aura of a specific person, not a generic memorial.
For Teena, creating these assemblages is now her therapy — and her gift to others who are searching, as she once was, for something real enough to hold their love in.
